Local traditions and customs

Traditions and customs for different events in life:


  • The old fate fairies are present at a child’s birth
  • The first name is the same
  • The engagement with her retinue: rings, the fiancés’ kiss, the fiancée’s gift, flowers, tasting the same bread
  • The “devils”, spreading the money and wheat
  • The procession of the grooms, bride stealing, wheat or money spreading, money, crossing the threshold on the wedding day
  • The coin from the dead, the loved objects of the dead, earth and money thrown into the pit, mourners


Customs and traditions in different occasions

  • The dances – at different times, but especially at the grape harvest, the youth organize artistic soirées followed by dancing until dawn. National and modern dances are danced. The Swabs’ favorite dances are the waltz and polka, while the Hungarians’ is the ciardaș.
  •  Sleighing – there are many slopes, but the most common is the one that descends perpendicularly on the former electric track. Lately skiers appeared who venture from Fântânele or Maiera.
  •  The apostle – reading the Apostle, or singing it is typically done by the church cantor and, at the biggest celebrations, by the pupils from the common school.
  •  The Feredeu – Each year on September 14, the people of Șiria, Galșa and other common flock in large numbers to the Feredeu spring. In the shadow of the forest, at the foot of the hill Hidicut, the hermitage and around the spring, they say goodbye to the passing summer and from the forest that loses its leaves.
  •  On certain religious holidays, the churches organize field or hill processions, where wreaths are intertwined and the harvest is blessed.

  •  In October “Harvest Day” is celebrated
  •  Christmas carols, children go “Starring”
  •  On New Year’s the children go with the “ciuralexa”

  •  The Ioan Slavici Symposium
